There are few places where beauty and awe exist so closely together as they do at sea.
On a calm summer day, the water seems gentle. The wind fills the sails, the rhythm of the waves brings peace, and the horizon stretches endlessly into the distance. It is easy to fall in love with the sea.
The Sea Has Another Side
But the sea has another side as well.
When the wind freshens and the waves begin to build, everything changes. The boat moves more violently, the sky grows darker, and every action requires your full attention. You think ahead. Is everything properly secured? How is the weather developing? What is the current doing? Where will we find a safe harbour?
It is precisely in moments like these that you realize the sea demands respect.
Perhaps that is what makes her so extraordinary. She cannot be controlled. You can only learn to work with her.
Always Stay Alert
During long ocean passages there are days when you remain focused for hours on end. There is little room for distraction. Your attention is constantly on the wind, the sails, the traffic around you, and the waves rolling beneath the hull.
And yet, those are often the days that leave the most lasting memories.
Dolphins in the Waves
Then, without warning, dolphins appear.
As if they are completely unconcerned by the rough sea, they effortlessly play among the waves around the boat. They race along the bow, disappear beneath the surface, and moments later emerge again, as though reminding us how naturally they belong to the ocean.
These are moments you never forget.

And then, after hours or sometimes days at sea, you hear a phrase every sailor knows.
That simple call always brings a smile.
Not because you have grown tired of the sea.
But because you know it’s finally time to let the tension drift away.
A Safe Anchorage
When the anchor finally settles in a quiet bay or a sheltered anchorage, the world changes once again. The wind softens, the boat barely moves, other yachts lie peacefully nearby, and the sky slowly turns a deep shade of blue.
Sometimes we pour ourselves a glass of sparkling wine.
We relive the day together. That unexpected wave. The wind that proved stronger than forecast. The dolphins that swam alongside us for a while.
Sleeping Beneath the Stars
And then something happens that feels almost like a luxury at sea.
There is nothing left to watch.
No course to steer.
No lookout to keep.
No decisions to make.
Only the stars above you.
I often lie down on the trampoline at the bow of the boat. I look up at a sky filled with stars and feel the gentle movement of the boat beneath me. As if the sea, which had shown its strength only hours before, is now quietly telling me that enough has been done for today.
I don’t think I sleep better anywhere else.
Perhaps that is the greatest lesson the sea keeps teaching me.
Precisely because she can be so powerful and unpredictable, you learn to appreciate stillness even more.
And perhaps that is true not only for life at sea.
