A beautiful blue sunlit sky while we are sailing along the south coast of Turkey to our first port in Greece: Kastelorizo.

A little island very close to the Turkish coast and surounded by other Turkish islands. The last miles however take us long with the wind more and more coming from the nose and a strong current against us.

Nevertheless Kastelorizo is coming slowly closer and it is marvelous to see how the little town with its rich history reveals itself to us; beautiful little houses, an old castle with a big Greek flag proudly waving on top and all this surrounded by azure blue waters. We are back in Europe

We are pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome we receive here. It seems to be the Greek indepence day when we arrive and everything is closed, but the port police assures us we can walk around freely and enjoy ourselves. The formalities can be done later. What a contrast with Egypt where you even get checked all the time after you have done your official paperwork. The local inhabitants are eager to help us to find our way in their town without expecting money or gifts for it. Just happy to help. What a warm, friendly welcome!

The next morning the paperwork goes quick and smoothly. After that we celebrate our return to Europe with a long, pleasant hike in the hills. The sweet fragrance of spring flowers and the joyful song of many birds are accompanying us. Again we are struck by the difference between the harshness of Egypt and the loveliness of Kastelorizo. Maybe it is the vast, harsh desert that forms the harsh mentality of her inhabitants?! Maybe because of the scarcity of nature here the people had to become harder and more self centered for their survival… Whatever the reason is, we are more than happy to be away from the corruption, dishonesty and the constant begging for sigarettes and money. And just to be here to enjoy the lovely spring sunshine with warm, friendly people!
