Swimming with Stingrays in the Tobago Cays can be seen as one of the highlights in our sailing holidays.
These beautiful curious, but docile animals can be seen swimming like a kind of UFO’s around our yacht. Being anchored in the Tobago cays we usually even see one parked near the anchor of Yemaya. With the flaps they dig themselves in the sand. Sometimes only the eyes are visible. With the eyes on top and the mouth underneath the body they can never see what they are eating! According to wikipedia they use smell and electroreceptors to know what they are eating. Sounds a bit weird to me, but well if you’re used to it. They are (distantly) related to sharks, but they are really quite harmless. The only danger is in the razor like barbs in the tail. They will only use them if they feel threatened. You should never step on the tail of a Stingray! Swimming with Stingrays isn’t dangerous (article NBC news), but it is a very special experience.
