Bequia, being one of the small islands of St, Vincent& the Grenadines, surprised us with some of the best hikes with stunning ocean views.

Hiking versus sailing.
Living aboard a beautiful sailing catamaran and sailing the oceans sounds like a dream. Well, it really is! But sometimes after a lot of sailing around, being shaken by the waves and salt water in your hair, it can be great to finally change the sea for some land again. Than it is time to look for the best hikes with stunning ocean views to see the beautiful, peaceful ocean with solid earth under our feet.

Bequia, hiking island.
Bequia is a very nice island for hiking, as we found out. There is a lot of nature to discover on the steep hills surrounding Admirality bay. One of our favorite hikes start from Lower Beach. First you have to find your way to the start of the path, but the people living there are eager to show it to you. They didn’t mind us asking the way at all. They definately don’t share our fondness of hiking though and looked at us as if we were crazy to climb a steep, rocky hill out of free will with even a smile on our faces.

Stunning ocean views.
After a rather streneous climb along rocks of volcanic stone covered with all kinds of trees and orchids, we found ourselves on the top of a ridge. From here the path was easy and we walked over the ridge, looking out on the mini yachts far below in the bay and stunning ocean views on both sides. Suddenly the hustle and bustle from Port Elizabeth had changed into a profound silence and peacefullness with only the sound of birds. Just amazing to experience this side of Bequia as well!

Island of clouds.
Bequia is named by the ancient Arawaks and means island of clouds. It is true that these high hills can be covered quickly by clouds, giving it a dramatic view. They also say that Bequia is the island of many faces. It is certainly an island which pleasantly surprised us on our several hikes. That such a small island can have so much variety! It is more than worth while to explore Bequia on foot and enjoy the Caribbean nature here. If you would like to do one of the best hikes with stunning ocean views, but prefer somebody to guide you through the Bequia bush bush, you can also contact “Bushman” Brent Gooding (784-495-2524). He provides excellent hikes all through the island.
